5 Tips For Choosing The Perfect Site For Your Greenhouse

May 21, 2019

Let’s say you have a green thumb, or you WANT to have a green thumb. And you want to become a gardener with a greenhouse, doing it properly – in a way that is affordable but allows you to garden all year round.

Whether you are a residential gardener, or a greenhouse hobbyist looking to make a start in the world of greenhouse growing, the Australian market has the perfect product for you.

The big question is, ‘where should I put it?’!

Let’s look at some of the points you should think about when you are working out exactly where to position your brand new greenhouse or glasshouse.

Think about the sun.

When positioning your greenhouse, maximising the sunlight is very important. We recommend your greenhouse receive at least 6 hours of direct sunlight a day. Be mindful of shadows cast by buildings and trees, especially during short winter days. Greenhouse glazing under or too close to trees can also become quite dirty, further lessening light transmission. Leaves will also clog gutters quickly if the greenhouse is positioned under trees.

Typically we suggest a north-south orientation for your greenhouse but if that’s not possible, don’t panic. Internationally there is a lot of emphasis placed on orientation to maximise light interception in the greenhouse but because our light levels are so much higher, this is not so much of an issue here in Australia.

It’s all about drainage.

If heavy rains can flood up an area on your property, avoid that space. The last thing you want is having any excess water on your greenhouse or glasshouse floor, allowing mozzies to breed or just being slippery and dangerous! If you can find a reasonably level site or a place with a gentle slope, then you can just let gravity do its thing and get on with growing your veges!

A bit of shade can be a good thing…

It gets hot here in Australia. The sun can be brutal, so if there is an opportunity to position your greenhouse with some natural shade from trees, take it (we don’t mean right under the tress either!). Deciduous trees ideally – in winter, they will drop their leaves allowing the sun to shine through, and in summer their foliage will provide some coolness. Just ensure these trees don’t block your vital sunlight through the short winter days.

If you are in a climate with summer temps above 30 degrees, you will need to use our heat reflective shade system to allow your plants to flourish. Our shade systems are specially engineered with full aluminium framework. We use an aluminet cloth, full aluminium weave. This ingenious product reflects up to 50% of the suns intensity before it enters your greenhouse. We have a range of shade systems available for specific models within our range, if you would like to know more, just click here.

Protection from the elements … like wind

Strong winds can damage lesser quality greenhouses – so if your greenhouse is more basic and lightweight, make sure to choose a spot that is sheltered from prevailing winds, and wind tunnels.

If that’s not possible, you could build a temporary fence with shade cloth or open weave which would provide some windbreak for you.

We have models within our range which are perfect for high wind areas: the Supreme Greenhouse and Deluxe Greenhouse ranges – either of which could be the solution if you are in an intensive wind area. These ranges are engineered to last a lifetime, and incorporate a special design to withstand adverse weather conditions, even including full box section frames (Windsor Series), along with extra cantilever braces in the roof and eaves for added strength.

Make it easy to get to.

Having a greenhouse is something to be enjoyed, and never a chore.

Make sure your greenhouse or glasshouse is positioned close to your home so you can easily access it whenever you want and take care of your plants regularly.

Having a greenhouse or glasshouse at home can bring an enormous amount of joy and reward, so knowing how to place it correctly is vital.
